Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Analysis of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) obtained from air filters and water effluents, sample originate from the Port Talbot steelworks and Scunthorpe BOC metalworks. Samples are analyzed via GC-MS to verify coke ovens are within government compliance.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a good amount of work responsibilities. I was also allowed to help on other projects fairly often.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have largely developed my professional lab skills and organization skills. I have become more adept with GC-MS processes and maintenance. I have also learned important quality control procedures such as handling and creation of QC charts.

I received plenty of support during the placement, I was shadowed often during the first couple of weeks to train me on the methods at TSS.

Make sure to research the job role thoroughly, I was given this role as I had mentioned and shown my lab project with a heavy involvement with GC-MS. Before applying for this placement broaden your general knowledge of steelmaking and analytical chemistry.
