Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work as a Senior Reward Analyst within HR. I mainly work within the Benefits and Pension space of Reward. My role involves:
- Answering complex and technical employee queries. Sometimes, this entails liaising with benefit suppliers.
- Undertaking data analysis around benefits and pensions which supports strategy, benefit quotes for benefit renewal and trends around employee behaviour.
- Liaising with benefit suppliers around renewal contracts, queries and invoicing.
- Day to day administration related to our benefits and discounts.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have enjoyed my CIPD programme as it has given me the opportunity to learn about wider HR and enabled me to interact with HR colleagues, who I might not have interacted with. It has been good to see the theory e.g. around employee grievances, I have learnt in the CIPD modules applied in real life situations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed many skills in my role. For instance, I have developed my written and spoken communication skills as I regularly communicate with employees at all levels and benefit suppliers. Furthermore, I have developed my problem-solving skills and resilience, as I'm regularly involved in resolving complex benefit queries. Finally, I have developed my data analysis as I regularly undertake data analysis before and after the annual benefit window.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

To begin with, I did not have timelines for completing each module, which I found quite challenging as I am someone who likes to work to a deadline. A few weeks into the apprenticeship, Babington provided timelines which really helped me keep on track! I also find the monthly catch ups with my Babington tutor really useful as it helps me identify my strengths and any HR areas where I need to focus on.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have received a lot of support from my Line Manager during my apprenticeship. My Line Manager has taken the time to provide learning sessions around stakeholder management and Reward. Furthermore, my Line Manager regularly ensures that I am feeling comfortable with the apprenticeship and recognises the progress I have made.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Babington, my training provider, have helped bring the HR theory I have learnt to life through workshops. In particular, my Babington tutor has shared resources and made suggestions to help me meet the assessment criteria. Furthermore, my tutor is great at offering praise and motivating me to continue working hard towards completing the apprenticeship.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the practical workshops offered by Babington have helped bring the HR theory to life, which has subsequently boosted my knowledge and confidence. One workshop in particular that stands out is one where we were required to present a business case to senior leaders regarding solutions for a company with falling engagement. I have taken the feedback from such sessions and applied them when presenting to colleagues in real life.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Before the pandemic, there was the opportunity to take part in various activities, such as lunch time yoga. Our social team also regularly organised HR get togethers and fun charity events. In the current situation, such activity has become virtual. For instance, our Chief People Officer promoted 'virtual cuppa' sessions where HR colleagues could join a Teams call and just have an informal chat with each other.

Why?

I would recommend Direct Line Group to others, as I feel it is a progressive company, which is striving to be the best for its employees and customers. The collaborative, relaxed and transparent culture makes you feel valued, and in my experience there are opportunities for professional and personal development.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Direct Line?

I would encourage individuals applying to DLG to demonstrate curiosity, adaptability and creativity, as we are now becoming more agile as an organisation. Furthermore, I would advise individuals to familiarise themselves with the company brands, values and the new behaviours as these are fundamental to how Direct Line Group operates and underpins everything we do.
