Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

good job, maintaining plant and equipment to operational standards, follow the correct work processes and procedures, see different areas of work i.e. pipelines, compressors, terminals, AGI's etc
communicating with suppliers, raising permits, working with project team on PIG / ILI runs where I can
college course and other training too
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Enjoy the work a lot and the fact i work within 2+ teams with my training group and my on site work team. Company culture is focused on safety which is a positive and highlighting that things have to be done correctly. meets expectations well and i do enjoy it

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

built on top of prior skills mechanically, learnt more interpersonal skills and how to best integrate multiple teams with one another, learnt about process safety and safety critical tasks plus law and legislation which governs our work and and vand and and and and and and v and and and

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

induction was well done, thorough - done pre-covid so all face to face, training is planned for us with what we need for the apprenticeship, and more on top, plenty of support if needed, mentor system and reviews are set out, heirachy set out for off and on job work too
How much support do you receive from your employer?

support available on anything if needed from management, HR, EAP helpline, mentors, colleagues, get guidance if needed too, everyone's more than happy to help out if you need it

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Cheshire College south and west provide as much support as required online and do their best, however it still doesn't beat proper face to face teaching - but covid allowing this may change in future back to more in person training v v v v v v v v v
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

BTEC L3 and then HNC in mechanical engineering helps with a lot of mechanical principles and the theories behind them to aid understanding of on job issues, also allows for developing critical thinking and utilising this in the day job, have learnt more from the academia than i realised i would
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Not many socials due to covid, plenty of professional company networking events to get involved in, i've helped out on some external careers events which were virtual for prospective apprentices, raise money for local charities through various initiatives v v v v v v v v v v v

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Have something relevant to engineering to relate to in your application/interview process and explain how/why you did it and what you learnt from it, be methodical and read things carefully/answer questions with proper thought, remain calm and confident but not over confident, be yourself ultimately as it shows
