Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On the substation my tasks include: maintenance activities, investigating equipment failures and determining risk mitigation strategies.
At the training centre I develop site specific skills, these include: fitting skills, health and safety courses, and substation equipment courses.
At university I study a degree in electrical power engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

National Grid have supported me throughout my programme and recognised the effort which I have put into my work. I thoroughly enjoy all the different aspects of my apprenticeship!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have gained confidence throughout my apprenticeship whilst also developing my knowledge of the electricity transmission network. I have also gained both electrical and mechanical fitting skills.

My qualification gives me a deeper understanding of the electricity transmission network and relevant concepts. This allows me to perform better on site as I have a greater understanding of the equipment and processes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I am a member of the 'Women in National Grid' group which allows me to network with others across the company. This group also provides me with support as a female engineer in a predominantly male environment.
