Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My current role is working alongside a Manufacture Engineering Team, working closely with the Production Equipment Manager. So learning lots about the machines/equipment that is used within the PCB area of the company.
Helping to make the Operators jobs run smoothly by supporting their needs and doing projects to make what they do easier and cheaper. Learning on the job to carrying out maintenance on the machines and to help solve issues when they arise.
Everyday is different, which is what I love about this current role.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I very much am enjoying my experience during this programme, although as mentioned before I can sometimes find myself in uncomfortable positions (mostly due to lack of experience) I've managed to get through those moments and very much aware that these situations are what helps improve my skills both in and out of work.
I'm getting a lot of satisfaction out of keeping my brain stimulated by constantly learning new skills/knowledge.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt many new skills, most of which would be electronic and mechanical skills. This mostly relates to the equipment used within the PCB area as I can feel my knowledge growing everyday.
Many of my skills are constantly being challenged and therefore developed during my role. This extends from computer skills such as Excel capabilities, to confidence boosting. The role often requires meetings with multi-functional teams, as I'm not the most confident speaker I have found this challenging. However, I can already feel myself growing as an individual in regards to communicative skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

During the 7 months that I've been in my role, everything has been well organized and structured. The company have been very attentive and welcoming and I really couldn't think of much that would need improvement without getting too petty!
In regards to College, this could do with some sort of improvement, especially during the introduction to the course as it didn't seem well organized to begin with.. however this could have been due to the fact we were in the middle of a Global Pandemic.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive appropriate support and I feel comfortable knowing that If I had any issues I would know where to turn and that help is always accessible.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5

Again, the support is definitely there if needed, each month I receive a review with my Apprentice Manager and she's consistently checking if there is any support that is needed to help academically.
The same can be said for my course Training Co-Ordinator from the College, she's always checking if assistance is required to help towards qualifications.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Some areas of learning from my qualification aren't directly visible for helping towards my role, for example mathematics, as It hasn't yet been needed much in my role. However, I know that I will benefit from what I'm learning and may be using it without even realizing.
The electrical principles and knowledge learnt from that so far is noticeably helping towards my role, what I'm doing and involved with is making much more sense to me because of what I've learnt/learning.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I'm aware of social activities that take place at GE, however I would imagine that Covid has held events like this back meaning not much spotlight has been put on them.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would definitely recommend GE to a friend, as there is such a wide range of roles within the company such as mechanics, technicians, engineers etc.
I feel like there must be something for everyone. For me, I like to be hands on and so far, that is being fulfilled in my role. For someone who is seeking a stimulating job and would like to develop a variety of skills and abilities around problem solving demands this industry has a lot to give.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?

I would just echo what I was told during my application period of the apprenticeship, which is to emphasis your willingness to the learn, ensure that you've done your research and be honest.
Be yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions, it only proves that you're eager to learn and want to get things right.
