Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am involved in completing environmental assessments of the schemes that are being done on the motorways and trunk roads. This can also include assessments of materilas used. I am also getting involved in completing depot inspections. I use arcGIS online a lot in my role, as well as microsoft office applications.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am really enjoying the programme. The online learning I am doing with my training provider is at a good pace and I am able to relate what I learn back to what I am doing in my day job. I am completing a large variety of tasks which I am finding really enjoyable.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my confidence in my role and am developing new knowledge around SHE legislation, with a particular focus on the environmental aspects. I have learnt how to use arcGIS online and feel comfortable using it to complete simple mapping tasks. I will learn surveying skills for protected species once I am out on site more.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well structured. I know what I will be covering in each module with my training provider, and am getting lots of support from members of my team to complete tasks at work that relate to what I am learning. I have regular meetings with my learning coach and line manager.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive lots of support. I have a catch up with my line manager every week and my whole team is friendly and I can approach anyone if I have a question or problem. I also have regular one to ones with my learning coach so if I have any issues or need extra support that can be sorted then.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

During my induction I set my target as a distinction and my learning coach is supporting me to achieve this. I have regular one to ones where we discuss my work and portfolio. All of the tasks I submit I receive feedback on quickly, with and further points I need to develop noted.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The knowledge I am gaining helps me to understand why I am doing some of the tasks I am completing in my role. Once I have completed a module I then email my team to let them know what I have learnt, which has lead to me being involved in work they are doing related to these areas.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Due to covid and working from home I don't really know. My team would usually have meals but this obviously isn't currently going ahead. There are charity fundraisers and volunteering events that I can get involved in to meet new members of the team, and I am often involved in early careers events and forums.

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?

Why?
I have received lots of support and am really happy with my apprenticeship and job as a whole. Due to there being a wide variety of apprenticeships on offer I think there is a large chance that someone would find something they would be interested in. There is a dedicated early careers team too.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
To research the company, achievements and values in advance and make it clear during your application and interview that you have done this. Stay relaxed during the interview and ask questions if you have any. If you have any experience related to the role you are applying for make sure to include that.
