Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Get to site for 7:30/8, make sure all documentation is filled out regarding health and safety. Then I set out the work required for the day and brief this to the guys. I track this progress and report back to my manager.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Some days can be really stressful but when you have a good team it can relieve a lot of this stress. I love being out all day and it’s always a great feeling when a project comes to an end to see what you have achieved.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt so much on how projects are run to meet the requirements of the client and to hit milestones. Working on site gives you a knowledge you can’t learn from books/ being in a classroom.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I feel like my programme could use more 1-1 meetings and regular development meetings. However because of the environment of construction I understand that there is not always enough time to do stuff like this.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My manager is always on the phone ready to answer any questions I may have. He also regularly visits site to make sure everything is running smoothly and to pick up on anything that might need changing. My manager also allows me to complete college work once a week but it would be great if we could have more development meetings.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I revive a lot of support from the team at Basingstoke. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is always checking in on us for regular views and to remind us of targets that need to be hit. Steve our tutor is great and has a perfect balance of making us work hard but to a realistic amount.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My course is construction in the built environment which mainly looks at the elements that go into construction of buildings. This is different to my role as a civil engineer but it is useful in order to get onto a civil engineering degree at uni which is what I want to achieve.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I often get involved in social events like the Christmas parties etc but I have never taken part in any of the other activities but I am aware they are there.

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is a lot to learn in this apprenticeship and I believe it is enjoyable. The team at LoHAC are great and I think anyone would be happy to work here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Definitely give an apprenticeship a lot of thought, not only are you getting a degree you are getting valuable experience that other students aren’t getting which is going to propel you ahead of others doing similar things.
