Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I take cement orders, deal with the vehicle schedule / delivery plan. Deal with customer invoices and accounts. Answer phone calls dealing with customer queries. I also deal with planning and take care of the packed cement deliveries that go to construction stores throughout the UK. I also work closely with the drivers and keeping their FORS training up to date.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy being trusted with leading projects and having a big responsibility. It's a good feeling knowing you can be trusted at such a young age. There's always something different to do and different kind of obstacles in logistics, no day is the same. Being an apprentice I still learn new things every day

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I've definitely come out my shell since working with Tarmac. The Graduate development programme has really helped us young people in the business. Tarmac work very close with new employee's to ensure they get the help and guidance they need. I've learned customer service skills and how to use different systems etc.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
When I joined in 2018 we all got a clear structure of the grad/development programme over the course of the next three years. This proved to us that there was a clear stable structure in place all through our development, and this was before we even started. I'm made aware of deadlines and end goals in plenty of time so I can stay organized
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Tarmac are always willing to help with any support I may need. Whether it be within my office or with the early development team, you're never made to feel like you're on your own. There's a great deal of support and different ways of overcoming obstacles in the business
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider has helped me through the past few years, guiding me and marking my work as I go to ensure I'm on the right track. Any points they think that I could work on I was made aware of. Before Covid we had weekly meetings face to face to plan what work I'd be completing next
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
When doing work for my qualification it teaches me a lot about my day to day job and how to build / work on new skills, and skills I may already have. My role and working towards my qualification go hand in hand. It also motivates me to learn new skills so I can use that as evidence for my college work
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Within the graduate / apprentice programme there's lots of different options when it comes to networking with others. You have a lot more opportunities to visit different sites and meeting new people as it's all part of your development. I really enjoy training days with other graduate and apprentices. This used to be throughout the year but after the pandemic it was moved to online meetings, which we were able to do more frequently

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Tarmac to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Tarmac to anyone, whether you're leaving school or want a career change. There's so many different roles and options within the business that there is something for everyone. It's a very welcoming business to work for, and knowing you'll always have support networks gives me peace of mind for anything I may have within my role
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
Go in with an open mind, It's a very friendly work place and different options for everyone. Tarmac welcome anyone to the business and are very big on breaking the gender barrier within the construction industry. They are also very big on mental health awareness which I personally think is extremely good.
