Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I'm currently in training to become a substation craftsperson, my role will be to complete maintenance and refurbishments on all substation plant and apparatus. Im currently training and learning a variety of skills to be able to complete the apprenticship
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy the programme and is the best decision career wise I have made. I have a fantastic support system in place from my training providers, line managers and mentors for when i go to site. The training academy is amazing with a varied programme, great teaching and great benefits

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

In the short period of time ive been on this apprenticeship I have already learnt a variety of new skills undertaking a variety of different courses. This range from working at heights, confined spaces, hand skills to name a few. Ive also developed better team working skills and social skills

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well structured, i have an overview of all the training i will complete over the 3 years, i no exactly when and where im meant to be, when im away at the academy and on site. I had a great induction, the training has been fantastic and all the training staff and managers are easily accessible any time of day to solve any queries or issues i have.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

National grid provides a fantastic level of support to its employers, all the training staff and managers are easily accessible, theres a great mentoring system to help you through the course. Overall every staff member will help you in anyway if you go to them with a problem. Theres a great attitude towards the development of apprentices
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider provides me with a fantastic level of support when and where its needed. The training is provided in a way that is easy to understand and learn, however if there is things we struggle with or need help with they are there to provide us with extra support, one to one tutoring and general guidance
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification that I'm training to is essential to the role im training towards. In the short period of time ive been with National Grid i have already learnt so much about the electricity transmission side of the business.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is many of extra curricular activities to get involved in at work. There are company events and roadshows, social opportunities organised through the internal company website. The training academy has many sport facilities, gym and arranges out of work activities such as bowling for the apprentices

Why?
Its a great company to work for. It has fantastic benefits and provides you with a thoroughly enjoyable training programme with the chance to learn a variety of new skills and gain qualification for a career in the power network industry working in electricity transmission. It has a great support network in place and is a great career opportunity for anyone
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Attend the interviews with an open mind. enquire about the job role and show them why your the right person for the job. Relax and be yourself, practise speaking confidently in an interview situation. On assessment day speak get to know others doing the assessment as you will find a lot of them will start the apprenticeship with you and makes it easier when you start to already know people
