My day typically involves assisting various teams with their work activities.
I am assisting in the mobilisation of a temporary compound. As a Tier 1 contractor my role is to ensure the subcontractors works are correct and liaise with any challenges faced on site.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

As my programme is configured of block release to university, this allows me to gain practical knowledge from site which will correspond with the theory learnt at university. Furthermore, the block week allows me to fully dedicate my rime to my studies.
This format suits me and i thoroughly enjoy it!

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to use a Trimble GPS, this allows me to "set-out" and "survey" works and areas. I have also been able to learn and understand how the basics of civil engineering and the construction industry. I also know more about how things are built.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme i follow is definitely well structured!
During the times between the block release, the university set us assignments and activities to complete, which is extremely useful to aid our learning.
During the Covid lockdowns, the lectures became online and on a weekly basis, i believe that this was not as effective, however the lessons themselves were very well structured and engaging!

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The staff within Kier are very supporting, I have been allowed time from work to dedicate more time to my studies when needed. Kier employees are also supportive, they often take time away from their work to explain the tasks set and answer any queries I may have. Any issues I may face, I am confident that i will receive the correct support from my mentor and colleagues
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The university support us by setting assignments and tasks between block weeks and lectures.
Each lecturer is dedicated to supporting their students, they are contactable any day of the week, they often take time out of their busy schedules to take phone calls or group calls to assist with any challenges we have

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The modules we study cover the technical aspects of civil engineering and construction, this allows me to perform better as this allows me to develop technical aptitude.
This serves me well when I am involved in the site activities, as I understand why the works are carried out in such a way, it also allows me to air my concerns or make improvement suggestions.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Prior to the UK lockdowns, my colleagues would arrange various social activities which were inclusive to all!
It is typical to find a social event on almost a weekly basis! Some of which vary from go-karting, meals or attending a comedy show.
Furthermore, there are various leisure teams set up such as rowing and football teams

The degree programme is a great way of gaining a degree qualification as well as gaining essential hands on experience. By gaining the technical knowledge through the university I will understand why things are done in a particular way, and the experience will assist my studies by giving me working examples and references to assist my studies,

To make sure that you use the resources provided by Kier, by learning from the extremely professional and experiences colleagues and by getting stuck in on the project you're working on.
