Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I maintain, repair, refurbish and install substation equipment. This could involve maintenance work, repair work, refurbish work, or just routine work around site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the program. I have learnt new skills, developed skills, learnt so much and gained some great friends along the way.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed skills when using equipment and gained skills by working with new tools and equipment. Also knowledge in how the electricity system works and how equipment works.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The structure has been well planned even with the headache of COVID-19, the planners do their best to try and get everything into the plan and try to have courses around Annual Leave etc.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My Manager supports me as much as he can with the policies. The training manager does his best to support us even though COVID-19 has caused headaches and he has told us to let him know is we are struggling.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The Academy has plenty of support on the apprentice page online to help along with studies and anything with the portfolio the online page had loads of guidance to help everyone.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification gives me a knowledge of the overall equipment National Grid look after. This gives me a knowledge on how the equipment works and how to maintain them so when I come out of my time I know how the system and equipment works.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At the Academy there is a group which meets once a week for extra engineering opportunities. They also run events for people outside the company which we can get involved in.

Why?
I've learnt so much, and gained and developed so many skills along the way. Having worked with other companies in my career I feel National Grid really try and look after you and the benefits are fantastic. I've made some great friends along the way as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Do your research into National Grid, who they are and what they do. This will help you with the application process and interview.
