Summer Scheme Intern Review

On a day-to-day basis I would be working with members of the team who undertake tasks relating to the pricing, design, valuation and marketing of New London Residential Developments. For the last two weeks I focused on creating an excel spreadsheet on the service charge and amenities for all the developments sold or being sold by Savills. Alongside this I have worked in helping create a report for a new site and also assist on finding comps for a speculative site which has come to the attention of the team.

I have found the summer scheme to be brilliant at explaining the huge amount of different roles that you can do within Savills and also more specifically to me to understand the different graduate rotations and APC pathways which I did not know about before. There are a number of roles that interest me and I would love to explore in the future if given the chance. For such a global business, the effort and time given to the graduates is fantastic and the number of individuals who have been with Savills for many years is testament to their ethos.

I have learnt a whole new range of skills that are specific to the team and may also never be covered at University. I have learnt about finding specific comps based on size, location, build, amenities and target market which stands as a great base for pricing new schemes. Additionally I have looked in more detail at floorplans and potential designs of apartments, understanding what might work well and what could be improved to deliver a more favourable scheme. Finally I have also learnt about sales and some of the techniques used by the sales and marketing team to boost a new scheme if it is slightly falling behind but also how to launch a brand new scheme to gain a lot of momentum.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the culture in my team and also in the company as a whole. The open plan office space allows different individuals from a multitude of teams to approach one another asking for help and guidance and not once has someone within Savills said they are too busy and cannot help. The company culture to me promotes hard work and consistency but also one of balance and enjoyment. A personal highlight was after the charity softball event, the vast majority of both of the Savills team's went out together and all got along very well throughout the evening.

During the talks and insights given by various members of the different departments, one thing that all of the speakers shared was enthusiasm and genuine passion for their chosen field. Not one of the speakers spoke about their desire to swap teams and when speaking about their own insights, advice and overview of the department they were more than happy to answers questions and give different perspectives. The huge variety of insights available covered all basis and never left you feeling like they were hiding their insight or dissuading you from joining a certain team or department.
