Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Working through block units combining theoretical and practical advanced engineering education. Working towards level 2 NVQ and level 3 BTEQ.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am enjoying this programme, the work is enjoyable and educational, we are supported extremely well and provided a high level of education.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have already learnt many new skills, mechanical engineering processes such as drilling, tapping, reaming, filing, sawing and the genera shaping and finishing of metal pieces.
Have begun building knowledge of electronic components, and how they operate within an electrical circuit and how to build these circuits.
Other skills in development are teamwork, communication and organisational skills.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program is extremely well organised due to the commitment of my line managers Gary and Hayley. IPS are also well organised with good spacing between assignments.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The employer is very supportive, they have worked hard to build connections with all of the apprentices and are great mentors to help motivate us. They are extremely professional and have a positive attitude towards the apprentices.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider (IPS) is extremely supportive, the tutors provide a high level of education, while all the documents and information we need to pass the apprenticeship is provided to us through our online portal, Moodle.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification I'm working through has given me a good education on engineering processes and as I progress further I'm becoming more competent in the role. The theory means we start practical work with confidence and so far I have had no problems performing my role well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Due to Covid-19 we have not had the usual level of involvement, however our line managers have worked hard to find ways for us to get involved, I am shortly taking part in a 100 mile charity challenge brought forward by my line managers.
When everything does open up and I start my second year on site I will endeavour to find activities I can get involved with.

Why?
They are an excellent company to work for, they provide high level training with a well organised and supportive programme. The company provides its apprentices with many opportunities to develop themselves and I couldn't be happier with the position I am in.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
The company is held in high regard so expect a lot of competition when applying, a well rounded resume with relevant qualifications is recommended, organising work experience is another way to potential stand out and display your interest in working for the company.
Once on the programme aim to beat deadlines and work above and beyond to make use of the opportunity.
