My role involves:

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the variance in the projects and tasks that I complete with each placement. The company has a good knowledge sharing culture and I am encouraged to take part in enrichment activities often, to develop both my personal and professional skillset.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt to be adaptive to different methods of working and have been able to gain theoretical knowledge as I have progressed through my scheme. My communication, listening and problem solving skills have all been developed.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
There is a lot of support from the Early Careers team and from the further education provider whilst studying. I have regular meetings with my assessor to set and review SMART targets every 12 weeks during the scheme. I am given responsibility to carry out tasks and report progress to my supervisor, but they are always available to help out if I am unsure on anything.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

We have a dedicated HR Team, that deal with any apprentice issues, as well as access to an employee assistance programme. During the COVID-19 pandemic additional support groups have been set up to help with loneliness at home and we have more regular team meetings to go through what we are doing, what help we need and general catch up with the team.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

As well as support during lesson time, we have drop in support sessions that provide any additional help we might need. We have plenty of time during college day to complete assignments and if we need any help we can email tutors.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The theoretical knowledge I have gained has really helped me in my role. I am able to apply the knowledge gained to tasks and in some instances improve processes that have stayed the same for years!
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are loads of enrichment activities to get involved with. Sometimes they are mandatory training activities, and others are on a volunteer basis. You can get involved in STEM workshops and activities, to go and teach people of all ages about engineering and how we make a difference in the world!

Why?
The company are really supportive in providing quality training to apprentices and making sure that you are really set up for a solid and successful career. There are opportunities post-apprenticeship too, so you can further your knowledge and qualifications to enhance your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
If you can, attend an open evening and ask plenty of questions about the roles and interview process. Research the company before your application and try and make yourself stand out with any relevant projects or hobbies that you do in your spare time, to show that you are really passionate about engineering.
