Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Providing good service to customers, serving drinks, taking orders and more recently ensuring that people who come into the business are both COVID safe and adhering to the new rules and regulations. These roles include being door host to seat guests and help them to understand the rules and how to act when inside the business. As a team leader we also deal with complaints and the most important being cashing up and closing the pub at the end of day
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed it however I did sometimes feel that the workload was difficult to manage and that certain parts of the programme made no sense, mainly in terms of visual assessments as they were based on your ability to lead a team however there would always be a manager on site at all times therefore making it very difficult to manage a team when somebody had already done what was required for the day, other than this I felt it as well structured

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed the skills to deal with people and most importantly how to deal with your team, this can mainly includes helping them with tasks and helping them with any issues they may have, including dealing with issues they have with other team members or even any home problems they might have, being supportive and assisting them in any way that we can. I’ve also learnt that sometimes with the team you need to have a firm hand and other times you do not

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very organised, I felt it was very clear what was required of me each month and I could communicate with my trainer whenever I needed to, COVID did have a big impact on the course however I felt everything that could be done was. My trainer was very supportive and understanding if work could not be done due to other circumstances. The course really helped me to understand my role within the company and what was required
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I did not feel that I received enough support, a lot of the course I was told I should be doing in work time and that in my schedule I would be on the rota for doing training and therefore I would get paid for it, this however never once happened I was required to work 40+ hours per week and be doing my training at home, without access to a computer at home this made life incredibly difficult
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Plenty, I could contact them whenever I needed any assistance and considering I did not have a computer they helped me to do it all over the phone with them, this was a massive help and I could not fault the assistance that they gave me, I would definitely go through lifetime training again, I had two different trainers and both of them were incredibly good, both of them offered great amounts of support when I needed it
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I felt that whilst the course was a big help in certain situations that it was very generalised as a team leader and what team leaders are expected to do, whilst in a lot of situations this is very helpful, day to day I don’t feel that there is much use for some of what I have learned however this may just be in my business and it may have been a different experience to others
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I don’t feel that there are enough social activities at work, we do charity work for macmillion however this seems to be once a year, whilst we raise huge amounts of money for them in this time period it makes you wonder what could be done if this was done all year round, I also don’t feel that enough is done for the staff, I spent a year doing this course to only earn an extra 0.25p an hour

Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
No
Why?
This is a yes and no answer I would as the environment we work in is enjoyable and working with the people we do is enjoyable however I feel for the long hours and very little social time we receive that the pay is terrible especially at a team leader level, staff incentives are basically non existent and that staff are incredibly undervalued, however I must say that during COVID Greene king and been brilliant in keeping staff paid
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
I would advise people to try and get in at a higher level such as team leader and to ensure that you have a good work life balance as once you get into the routine of not having one it is near impossible to get out of it, I would advise people to also try and get into one of the better brands of Greene king such as chef and brewer and brands such as hungry horse are incredibly difficult to work in and make your way up the ladder
