Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was assigned a mentor, who has a lifetime of experience in the industry, being recognised across Europe as an expert in his field. He allowed me to expand my knowledge, gain valuable experience, make executive decisions, and supported me always while maintaining an encouraging and growth persona when I did things wrong to ensure that I improved and learnt.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Despite working on spacecraft, most people saw it as a mundane and regular job in the manufacturing branch. Cross departmental collaboration suffered from this as people had little interest in helping beyond their personal scope of work. Quality as with most companies is viewed as a non-value added activity and I was treated as such by some people. Despite this though, I thoroughly enjoyed the placement and developed my character to work with these hindrances.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
The experience, opportunities, lesson learnt, and personal development has accelerated me in my career development massively. Despite my technical knowledge not growing as much as it would in an academic environment, job / industry specific knowledge was something I realised that despite thinking I thought I knew what I was going to need to know, I didn't, and had to change continuously to improve, allowing me to integrate and get out of my placement not what I wanted to at the start, but what I think now I needed to.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Airbus
Same as with any company; research your location, department, role, location, business, and job related activities before you apply. The amount of people that thought we made planes when it came to interviewing for a role as a spacecraft quality engineer was disappointing. Also, don't put so much credit toward technical knowledge, I get you have university as your main source of information on your CV, but your soft skills, ability to solve problems, learn and apply knowledge is way more important. You can learn what you need to when you get here, impress them with who you are as a person, not what you know.
