Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Each of GSK's potential products undergoes research and development which is a collection of studies in a project plan. For the project plans in my therapeutic area, I track and manage timelines and budgets for Non-Interventional Studies.
This involves chasing study owners to understand invoice timelines and study-milestone status.
When a project reaches a key milestone we compile budget and resource forecasts, various scenarios and potential risks to be presented at board meetings where senior leaders make decisions on whether to progress the asset to the next stage of development.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, after showing my competency I was granted ownership of several low-profile plans for which I independently manage the budget and timelines.
I also have oversight of my manager's plans and am responsible for maintaining less than 0% overdue activities for all of our plans.
During governance preparation, I have had the opportunity to support data collection and have delivered reports to senior leaders.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
First 2 weeks - Daily 121 online meetings with my line manager. Comprehensive training. However, lacked department-wide guidance on ways of working due to recent reorg.
First 4 months - Twice weekly 121 online meetings with my line manager. Set tasks and discussed deliverables.
Last 8 months - Weekly/ fortnightly 121 online meetings with my line manager. Set tasks and discussed deliverables.
Great training and support from my line manager despite the fact they work in GSK HQ (London) and I worked on GSK site in Stevenage.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Great. My team was very welcoming, although few of them worked on my site. The placement student community was massive on my site and I made lots of friends. Supported by Industrial Placement Committee organised events. Lots of DEI initiatives and support.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I had a great time on placement at GSK and would recommend working for my team to anyone who enjoys being organised and challenged. I found it difficult not being on site with my line manager, however regular meetings meant our relationship was still very strong and it didn't detract from my work.
Outside of work, I really enjoyed socialising with other placement students. The large student community at Stevenage makes it feel similar to university at lunch and outside of working hours.
