R&D Industrial Placement Student Review

I conducted independent research projects aligned to the needs of the department. My day-to-day activities involved designing and executing laboratory experiments, analysing data, and collaborating with teams to drive research progress. I participated in meetings, presented findings, and contributed to problem-solving efforts. This role enhanced my technical skills and scientific expertise, while cultivating soft skills like communication, teamwork, and adaptability in a dynamic research environment.

During my placement at GSK, I had a lot of responsibility as I led my own project. It was rewarding to see my individual work feed into bigger team projects, showing how my contributions really mattered. Managing my own timelines and experiments helped boost my technical skills and taught me about accountability and strategic thinking. Working independently gave me great insight into how research comes together in a collaborative environment.

I developed technical proficiency in laboratory methodologies and honed my analytical skills through hands-on research. I enhanced my ability to work autonomously while effectively collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. My communication skills improved as I presented findings and wrote detailed reports. Additionally, I strengthened my problem-solving abilities, adapting swiftly to research challenges. This experience deepened my teamwork skills and expanded my understanding of numerous research techniques.

I received excellent support and guidance from my supervisor, whom I met with weekly to discuss my plans and get help with any unclear areas. This regular interaction provided reassurance and direction throughout my projects. Additionally, I took part in monthly meetings with other students and their supervisors, where we shared our progress and ideas. These sessions were invaluable for gaining support and insights from peers.

The company culture at GSK was very friendly and collaborative. With around 90 other placement students on my site, there were plenty of opportunities to meet new people. Various events were organised for my department, the placement students, and the entire site to come together, creating a welcoming atmosphere. I regularly met with senior team members who were genuinely interested in my work and eager to offer their support, which was really nice.

I immensely enjoyed my placement at GSK, as it provided a deep dive into the industry while offering personal development opportunities beyond my project work. Having other students around was fantastic for both collaboration and socialising. It was clear that GSK has a long history with placement students, evident from the superb organisation and support throughout. The experience not only enriched my understanding but also allowed me to build strong professional and personal connections.
