Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day-to-day you will be involved in study team meetings to get an update on the status of the clinical trial. You will give updates on any progress made by the data management team, like how many data have been checked, if any queries have been sent to the sites etc. Lots of work on excel - checking raw data on spreadsheets
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - once online trainings were completed, I was assigned to 3 different clinical trials as the Data manager lead, although you are assigned a supervisor that is there for support whenever needed. Although the trainings helped somewhat, mostly you learn as you go, and as you face challenges you are encouraged to investigate and find out the answers yourself which can be quite challenging but also rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes - I have significantly improved by communication skills through presenting in meetings, my confidence has also improved, and also my technical skills in using excel have been improved through taking online training courses. Overall, I have gained a deep knowledge of how clinical trials work, which is a great advantage if wanting to work within this area after placement.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at GSK is amazing. Everyone is so welcoming - from my first day I felt like I was part of the team. There are team lunches every few months where everyone gets together and catches up outside of work, but in the office people will be happy to chat to you and network with a placement student, even if they aren't getting anything out of it themselves.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have had an amazing year at GSK. While the role itself can sometimes be repetitive and a bit dull, the people at GSK have made my experience. Because there are over 100 placement students at GSK HQ, there are so many people to make friends with. With IP UNITE, there are so many opportunities to socialise with other students through socials that are planned, and I have made life-long friends here. It has felt really rewarding being part of a company that has such a big impact on patients' lives.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
Take your time in making your application personal to you - don't give a generic AI written answer - it's obvious and it won't get you anywhere. When you get to the assessment centre/interview make sure you put yourself out there even if you are shy - just fake it till you make it. The interview questions are competency based eg what would you do in this scenario and not based on previous experience so there's no easy way to prep - just be honest and yourself when answering. The questions are designed to figure out what kind of person you are and if you would be a good fit for the team.
