Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an undergraduate placement student in software engineering, my role involves applying academic knowledge in a real-world work environment. I assist with software development tasks, learn from experienced engineers, and contribute to ongoing projects, gaining hands-on experience in the industry. Including all stages of the software development lifecycle.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a decent level of responsibility throughout my placement. I was placed on real projects almost immediately and had the opportunity to contribute to many throughout my time. I was even able to lead a couple of projects consisting of early careers member teams.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

During my placement, I gained valuable experience working with various tools and technologies used in the industry. I learned to collaborate effectively within teams, improve my coding skills, and develop a deeper understanding of software development processes. Additionally, I had the opportunity to enhance my problem-solving abilities and time management skills while working on different tasks. This experience allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a practical, real-world setting.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

During my placement/internship, I received a significant amount of support and guidance from my team. They were always approachable and willing to answer my questions. I had access to resources and training that enhanced my skills. Overall, the experience was highly supportive, allowing me to learn and develop in a collaborative environment.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was welcoming and collaborative, with a strong emphasis on teamwork. People were friendly, approachable, and always willing to lend a helping hand. The atmosphere was a balance between professionalism and a relaxed, supportive environment. Making it easy to collaborate and feel part of the team.
