Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In my role, I manage the accounting and analysis of the company’s marketing spend, ensuring accurate month-end reporting, journal postings, and balance sheet reconciliations. I also provide insightful commentary to stakeholders, support decision-making, and work cross-functionally with planning, procurement, and accounting teams. I continuously improve reporting processes and assist with commissions and property costs when needed.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given significant responsibility during my placement. I led key aspects of the month-end process, including preparing and presenting marketing cost commentary to senior stakeholders. I also took ownership of calls with various teams to explain variances and ensure alignment. This level of responsibility helped build my confidence and deepened my understanding of financial reporting and stakeholder management.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I’ve developed both technical and soft skills in this role. I’ve enhanced my technical competence through managing complex month-end processes, journal postings, and balance sheet reconciliations. I’ve also improved my communication and teamwork by regularly engaging with stakeholders across Finance, Procurement, and Planning, ensuring alignment and accuracy. This has strengthened my confidence in speaking with others and building productive working relationships.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a great deal of support throughout my placement. My line manager provided regular guidance through weekly catch-ups, and the Head of Year was also very approachable and supportive. In addition, being part of the intern group created a collaborative environment where we could share experiences and help each other. This support network played a key role in my development and confidence during the placement.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was amazing—supportive, collaborative, and inclusive. Everyone was approachable and willing to help, creating a positive and welcoming environment. There was a strong emphasis on development and teamwork, which made it easy to learn, ask questions, and feel like a valued part of the team.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement to a great extent—it was one of the best experiences I’ve had. The work was engaging and meaningful, the team was incredibly supportive, and I felt genuinely valued. It gave me both professional growth and personal confidence.

My advice would be to be yourself and show your enthusiasm for learning. Virgin Media O2 really values authenticity and a positive attitude. Be confident, outgoing, and open to new experiences—don’t be afraid to ask questions or get involved. The more you engage, the more you'll get out of the experience.
