Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Update and maintain economic and fiscal datasets on a monthly basis.
Produce and format charts and tables for use in official publications.
Lead on forecasting selected smaller tax lines and revenue streams.
Contribute to written analysis and supporting material for reports.
Assist with policy costings and liaise with external departments.
Support model development and automation using Excel and coding tools.
Keep documentation and handover materials up to date.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yeah, lots of responsibility. One of the key parts of the job as a placement student is communicating our latest economic data to other government departments, and it is the student's responsibility to pull all this data together, make sure the distribution list is correct, and make sure it gets sent out to government departments at an allotted time.

Improved Excel skills, particularly in handling large datasets and building structured models.
Gained experience in economic forecasting and data analysis.
Started learning R to support automation and model development.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Lots of support and guidance. The organisation included lots of people who had previously done a placement there, so I've been lucky to have lots of support from people who were previously in my shoes.
In addition to this, seniors in the organisation were very happy to chat regularly about the organisation and anything else.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Great atmosphere, especially due to the small department I was in. A very flat hierarchy and regular socials to get to know colleagues. Also opportunities to work from home half of the week which helped to create a positive work/life balance.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and was very lucky to have been placed in the department I was. I've had significant exposure to the internal working of government economics and been able to get a broad understanding of how the government's budget process works and how economic analysis and government interlink.
