Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my 12-month placement at BAE Systems, I rotated through SR&J, Air Data, and Concept Engineering. In SR&J, I supported structural repair assessments using FEA tools. In Air Data, I worked on system validation and sensor analysis. In Concept Engineering, I contributed to early-stage aircraft design and feasibility studies. Day-to-day tasks included data analysis, technical documentation, and team collaboration. The placement broadened my engineering knowledge and strengthened my interest in aerospace innovation.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility and treated as a full-time engineer. This was based on demonstrating the ability to produce high-quality work and earning the trust of my team. I contributed to real projects, worked independently, and presented findings to senior engineers. Being given this responsibility allowed me to develop professionally and gain confidence in my engineering judgement.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, during my placement I developed several technical skills. I gained experience with in-house CFD tools, improving my understanding of aerodynamic analysis. I also enhanced my parametric modelling skills using CAD software, particularly in Concept Engineering. Additionally, I was introduced to machine learning concepts applied to engineering problems, which helped broaden my perspective on data-driven design and analysis. These skills complemented my academic background and prepared me for more advanced engineering challenges.

I received lots of support and guidance throughout my placement. Everyone was approachable and willing to help, and I always felt comfortable asking questions or seeking feedback.
