Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Process pensioner payroll, reconcile payroll data, ensure HMRC compliance, support treasury operations, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines. On a day-to-day basis, this would involve completing bank reconciliations for pension schemes (bank statements and making sure opening/closing balances are reconciled). Also processing pensioner payroll, making sure members get paid on time each month and running specific reports for this.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - my workflow is given to me on a monthly basis and it is up to me to get this done on time. The work I have been doing effects the Accounts Team quite a lot so the type of work is important to get done accurately and within deadlines. In terms of payroll, this would be on a daily basis - making sure I have this done within the deadlines - so that pensioners get paid on time. In terms of priority - I would have to weigh this up depending on the work I was doing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt how the pension markets operate, especially within the cash management side - how to effectively financially manage a pension scheme, keeping funds/contributions balanced. I have developed my communication skills - keeping what I need to say in a concise way, this is helpful when communicating across teams (i.e. Treasury to Payroll or vice versa)

I have quarterly meetings with my performance manager. She goes over what I have been doing well, what I can improve on and we cover any queries I have - whether that is work related or not. I have also been given of training on Isios learning platform - IsioLearn. Also, within the office - there is always someone in from my team. This has really helped me form relationships within the team.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Isio's culture is people first. They treat they're staff well - lots of company benefits such as flexible working hours, birthday leave and many social events.
