Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was based in the Cloud Engineering department with the responsibilities of maintaining and improving the Public Cloud platforms using GCP, AWS and Azure. I was involved in working with production systems, ensuring they stayed up and running without fault. Improving systems in which i saw faults and assisting other departments within the company to better utilize the public cloud platforms
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
After training up and showing competency i felt i was treated as a regular employee and given all the reasonability as well as expectation that would entail. My role often involved talking to other departments in which they wouldn't know im an intern and so wouldn't be treated as one.Your work is expected to the same caliber as everyone else but you have the bonus of the future careers support system around you to help you achieve this quite easily.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
The skills I've learnt are invaluable and will stay with me for my career, whether its communication and presentation skills gained from presenting to customers or the technical analysis and troubleshooting from working in and around production systems. Also gained so much knowledge in the public cloud that i didn't know before such as cloud networking, DevSecOps and software engineering.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The support system around all the interns was amazing, we have assigned buddy's, mentors, group mentors and scheme sponsors. This allows us to have a network of contacts from day one. The future careers team are espically helpful in any need and it helps that you're in a cohort of around 16 interns whom are going through the same programme and support each other.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Culture was amazing, it was relaxed in the way that if you do whats expected you'll have such a pleasant time. Everyone is working together and collaborating and i often go to colleagues for advice or guidance. Their are many events going on throughout the year that break up the work so always something different every month.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Enjoyed this placement immensely and highly recommended to anyone thinking about applying. Taught me so much and been so friendly that im sure to hold the lessons learnt here for a long time. The network ive created whilst im here also has and will be invaluable as i start my professional career.

What advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2
Even if you're not technical or are extremely, this placement is worth your time and i would highly recommend it. VMO2 will set you up for success at a highly reputable company. Its a wonderful place to start your career and all you need to do is be yourself and showcase your intrigue and enthusiasm.
