Materials and Process Engineering Placement Review

My role involves a range of desk and laboratory-based work with an approximate 65:35 split respectively. As a team we work on a variety of short and long-term projects related to the M&P side of propeller manufacture. This includes, but is not limited to, solving day-to-day production issues, assisting with blade defect and material analysis, and introducing new materials. This involves a range of work such as running material tests to determine material properties, writing and publishing lab reports, updating specifications and liaising with suppliers and other teams such as the teams within the company.

I was given responsibility right from the start of my placement ad this has only continued to grow as the year has gone on.
Within the first two weeks of my placement I was given a range of long term projects to run throughout the year. This gave me the opportunity to manage a project, in some cases from start to finish. This helped me develop many skills and has been very beneficial for both my personal and professional development.

Throughout this placement I have both learnt new skills and developed existing skills. For example, I have become more confident in wiring technical lab reports. I have also developed my laboratory testing skills, becoming more confident with kit I had used before, such as tensiometers an also learnt how to use new equipment such as rheometers and DSC machines.
I feel I have continued to developed existing skills, and learnt new ones, throughout the whole placement.

I have been very well supported throughout my placement, both within my team and more widely from the placement supervisors. I have made numerous check-ins with my placement mentor with regards to my general wellbeing and have been well looked after by my team.
From the start I have always known where I can go to get support should I need it and my team have always made to explain any work they need me to complete and have been more than willing to help me if I get stuck.

The atmosphere within the whole company, but particularly within my team, has been very welcoming. I immediately felt a part of the team and felt comfortable asking for advice or help. I have found the whole company has a very approachable atmosphere, with people very willing to help each other out.
This has made the whole placement a very enjoyable experience.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement, both due to the work I have been involved in but also the nature of the people I have been working around.
The work has been meaningful and varied which has helped to keep it interesting and the people have been so welcoming it has made the whole experience a great learning opportunity and also very enjoyable.
