Actuarial Assistant Review

I work within the Actuarial & Consulting team and complete several pieces of client-related tasks as well as business development work. Some of my roles include actuarial valuation work, individual member calculations, pensions accounting work and data cleansing. I am also involved in multiple projects. e.g. Guaranteed Minimum Pension equalisation (GMPe) and Project Gambit where I work with members from multiple public pension schemes to calculate their revised tax position results.

Yes I have been given a lot of responsibility during my placement and this helps me to feel more professional. For example, there have been many occasions where I have picked up urgent client work and completing them under time pressure feels very rewarding once they are done. I also have been given responsibility within the Project Gambit team to communicate with members from public pension schemes e.g. police and doctors.

Some existing skills I have developed are communication and teamwork skills as I have had to do a lot of group tasks which involves speaking with other colleagues and collaborating to complete work in the most efficient way. I have also improved my Excel skills and learnt many new shortcuts and formulae. One new skill I have developed is using Power BI - I used this in the GMPe project to generate graphs for analysis.

I have received plenty of support during my placement. The team are always open to answering questions and sacrificing their time to explain what needs doing on Teams messages or calls. Throughout the year, my performance manager has also helped me to track my development by helping me to set goals at the start of the year and then seeing how these goals have been met by looking at feedback from the team.

At Isio, the working conditions are very flexible which helps to create a positive working environment. My colleagues are very friendly and help the day to be exciting whilst also doing work. The culture is excellent and the company is welcoming to people from all different different backgrounds. Furthermore, the team organise several socials which helps to strengthen friendships outside of work hours.

I have enjoyed my placement a lot as it has helped me to develop professionally as well as learning new actuarial techniques. The role has also given me the opportunity to apply actuarial concepts I already knew from university and this felt very rewarding. Working with different colleagues from different offices around the country has been a fun experience and enabled me to grow my professional network.
