Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Writing and reviewing software requirements, writing and testing embedded software produced by other engineers, coordinating with other engineers to review my own requirements and software, fixing bugs found in testing, making changes and adding to the codebase as required by our customer.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was. I was directly responsible for six areas of functionality within our system, including three of the most complex areas, which I inherited from a retiring senior engineer. I wasn't prevented from making mistakes - and I did make mistakes - and I was expected to resolve them in the same way a permanent engineer would. I had a direct impact on the team's success.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've learnt about IBM's requirements suite, I've learnt what constitutes a good requirement, I've developed knowledge of DO-178C, I've developed my programming skills, I've practiced my soft skills and communication.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received excellent support from GE Aerospace's Early Careers team. My team were welcoming and supportive, and I was shown the ropes quickly. I was encouraged to apply for professional certification through the IET, which I'm going through the process for right now.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
GE is obviously committed to psychological safety. I've experienced a strong culture of respect, where people aren't afraid to speak out about things they dislike - and people routinely do speak out. There is a lot of respect for early careers, with apprentices, interns and graduates being given real responsibility on critical projects.

What advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace
Demonstrate that you do actually want to work here. Technical skills can be taught, but soft skills can't. GE recruit for soft skills - I was not given a technical assessment before my internship.
