Actuarial & Consulting Industrial Placement Review

As an actuarial and consulting placement student at Isio, I support senior consultants in delivering client solutions. Daily tasks involve drafting reports, completing individual member calculations, setting assumptions, contributing in team meetings, and collaborating with other members of my team. I work on many clients to deliver the work that they need including funding updates, actuarial valuations and accounting work. I ensure compliance with regulations while gaining hands-on experience in strategic problem-solving and innovation.

Yes, I was trusted with meaningful responsibility during my placement. For example, I am trusted with completing calculations that directly informs client recommendations. I also completed work and drafted sections of reports that was shared with trustees which effected their decision making. I had the responsibility of compliance accountability which includes validating data and model outputs to meet regulatory standards (e.g., TAS 100). I balanced deadlines for multiple clients, ensuring that all deadlines are met with high quality work.

My placement has allowed me to develop both new technical skills and develop existing skills. I have gained hands-on expertise in actuarial tasks like individual member calculations and assumption-setting etc. Drafting client reports and contributing to meetings has enhanced my written and verbal communication and ability to simplify complex data. Collaborating across teams and managing multiple clients has strengthened time management and collaboration, while exposure to strategic problem-solving (e.g., funding updates) has developed my analytical and innovation skills.

I received structured support and guidance to ensure my development, balanced with opportunities to take ownership of tasks. I had lots of formal training developing my knowledge and skills and I had a dedicated 'buddy' assigned to me who would clarify tasks and provide feedback on deliverables. I worked closely with team members who provided guidance and I would get constructive feedback on my work to refine technical accuracy and communication style.

At Isio, I felt welcomed and comfortable in my work environment. Teams prioritise open communication and encourage input from people at all levels. I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Isio, as it both challenged and rewarded me. The variety of projects that I was involved with meant that it was never boring and I was continually learning. While the workload was demanding at times, the way I could manage multiple clients and deadlines built confidence in my abilities. Overall, the placement solidified my passion for actuarial consultancy, offering a dynamic environment where learning and contribution went hand in hand.
