Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Providing desktop planning support and maintenance of solutions involving the optical backhaul. Planning new services, removal of ceased or end-of-life services or equipment, update and creation of planning resources, optimisation of existing processes, and other ad-hoc tasks.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
All work has a real impact on the organisation. An example is that I have been given ownership of numerous technical diagrams accessed by hundreds within the organisation.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Since joining, I have developed a technical understanding of Virgin Media O2's optical network and learned to use Microsoft Visio for editing relevant technical diagrams. Additionally, I have refined my Microsoft Excel skills and used Visual Basic to automate and optimise processes.
During my placement, my soft skills have also been reinforced. These include critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and presentation skills.

Support options include my line manager, a mentor inside my team, a mentor outside my team, and a buddy. Learning and development came primarily from the mentor within my team.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company is incredibly welcoming and everybody is more than happy to support you as your integrate into a corporate working environment. There is no judgement and you are not expected to understand telecommunications prior to joining.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoy working at Virgin Media O2. I love working with my team and socialising with the other interns across all schemes. The Future Careers Committee also does a fantastic job hosting socials and fun events for all future careers schemes, allowing you to meet interns and graduates beyond your usual circle.

Prior to joining Virgin Media O2, do not worry about whether you understand enough about telecommunications. During your placement, ask plenty of questions and say yes to as many opportunities as you can.
