Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked as a Finance intern within Business and Wholesale OPEX. My day-to-day role involved undertaking ad-hoc projects to analyse data, providing insights that supported decision-making and forecasting.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Once I developed a solid understanding of the business and my role, there were always additional responsibilities I could take on and ways I could add value. Senior members of the team were keen for me to take responsibility for providing further insights into their areas OPEX.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learned a number of new skills through this role. Firstly, I have developed several hard skills such as advanced Excel skills, proficiency in using various financial systems, and a stronger understanding of accounting fundamentals. Additionally, I have also enhanced many soft skills, including presentation skills, teamwork, and time management.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a great deal of support throughout the scheme. I had a scheme mentor who met with me monthly to check on my progress. Additionally, we had a career mentor who helped us focus on personal development. On a day-to-day basis, I was supported by an extremely approachable and supportive line manager.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at VMO2 is very relaxed. They operate a highly hybrid business model, where employees are required to come into the office only twice a week. At the start, I found this challenging as an intern because I felt it hindered my learning. However, once I became proficient with the systems, the hybrid nature of the role became much more manageable. Additionally, the overall atmosphere is very supportive and inclusive. As someone with dyslexia, I especially appreciated the support I received.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Looking back on my placement, I had an amazing experience. I developed a wide range of skills that I can transfer to my future career. Additionally, VMO2 offers several great work perks that made the scheme even better. For example, I had the opportunity to visit the O2 twice to see artists like Usher and Taylor the Creator, as well as attend events like the Six Nations at Twickenham. Experiences like these, combined with a supportive scheme that challenged and stretched me, made my placement very enjoyable.
