Sustainability Industrial Placement Review

I work in the Global Sustainability Team in the corporate centre. The team focuses on 4 pillars: climate, nature, plastics and livelihoods. My role focused on climate, nature and plastics, which a particular emphasis on internal and external advocacy, landmarked by global events throughout the year e.g. UN COPs, DAVOS (WEF), UN General Assembly and London Climate Action Week.

Yes I managed the attendance of Unilever at COP29 and COP16, both in 2024. I was responsible for the agendas and briefs for delegates at this event. I have also been given multiple project management and assistant project management roles, which have given me responsibility.

Yes, I have developed lots of new skills in the role including thematic knowledge in the subject areas I worked it, written and verbal communication, project management and adaptability to change.

I received lots of support from my line manager and close team, who seemed interested in my personal development through the placement and allowed me to focus and explore areas I was interested in both within the team and the wider business.

Everyone I have interacted with at Unilever has always been very open to talk to me and tell me about their careers, answering any questions I have. I have really enjoyed the culture of the company whilst working here

I thoroughly enjoyed by experience on placement and am very glad I decided to go down this path. I feel I have learnt a lot and now have a much clearer idea of what I want to do in the future in terms of my career. I also feel I have developed many transferrable skills, both specific to the department I worked in but also wider. The social aspect within my team and with other placement students is also something I have valued highly.
