Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
During A&O Shearman’s First Year Programme, I explored key practice areas through interactive workshops, presentations, and panels with trainees, associates and partners. Each day involved sessions on topics like commercial awareness, corporate law, disputes, and pro bono work. I attended talks on global financial markets and secondments, including one at Fuse. Networking opportunities, such as lunches with trainee buddies and evening socials, provided valuable insight into the firm’s inclusive culture and international legal work.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Understanding the business and potential roles at A&O Shearman was eye-opening. Through sessions on corporate, finance, disputes and innovation, I gained a clear picture of the firm's global reach and the variety of work trainees can experience. Hearing directly from lawyers about their day-to-day roles and secondment opportunities helped me see the breadth of career paths available. It was inspiring to learn how trainees contribute meaningfully to deals and client work from the outset.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Yes, I developed my commercial awareness by understanding how lawyers apply it to real deals and client needs. I strengthened my communication skills through networking with trainees, associates, and partners and gained confidence asking questions in a professional environment. The legal jargon workshop helped clarify complex terminology, enhancing my understanding of legal language. Additionally, team-based discussions and presentations improved my collaboration and adaptability, which are essential skills for a future career in commercial law.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture at A&O Shearman was warm, inclusive and inspiring. Everyone I met came from diverse backgrounds, which created a genuinely welcoming environment where different perspectives were valued. The DEI session was particularly impactful, highlighting the firm’s commitment to inclusion and social impact beyond just legal work. It was clear that individuality is embraced and people are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, which made the atmosphere feel both supportive and empowering.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the insight, it was engaging, informative and exceeded my expectations. Each session offered a new perspective, from understanding the firm’s innovative work to hearing personal career journeys from lawyers at all levels. I particularly enjoyed the interactive elements, like workshops and group discussions, which made learning dynamic and collaborative. The programme not only deepened my interest in commercial law but also made me feel excited and motivated about a future legal career
