Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The programme involved two insight days. Each day combined workshops on commercial awareness, interactive case studies, and presentations. We heard from partners, associates, and trainees about their career journeys and the firm’s global work. There were also networking opportunities and a trainee buddy scheme, which allowed for more informal conversations and mentorship. The programme provided a clear, practical understanding of life at an international law firm.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Learning about A&O Shearman’s business showed me the range of practice areas, from corporate and banking to litigation and IP. I was particularly interested in Fuse, the firm’s tech innovation hub, and how legal technology is reshaping client services. The insight also explained the trainee route clearly, discussing the Vacation Scheme to qualification and highlighted the diverse work trainees experience across departments. It gave me a clearer view of the legal profession.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I developed a stronger understanding of the legal industry and the skills needed to succeed in commercial law. I improved my commercial awareness by engaging in case studies and workshops focused on real-world legal issues. The group activities enhanced my teamwork and communication skills, as I collaborated with other participants to solve problems and present ideas clearly. The insight also helped me build greater confidence in professional environments.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at A&O Shearman was impressive and welcoming. As a magic circle firm, it was clear I was surrounded by some of the best legal minds, but the atmosphere remained friendly, supportive, and open. Everyone I spoke to, from trainees to partners, was approachable and generous with their time. The environment felt ambitious yet collaborative, showing that while high standards are expected, the firm is also committed to fostering a positive, inclusive workplace.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Being in such a vibrant, professional environment in the heart of London made the experience even more special. I gained a huge amount of insight into the legal industry, the firm’s work, and the trainee journey. Meeting so many inspiring individuals, from fellow participants to experienced lawyers, was a real highlight. Overall, it was an inspiring experience that strengthened my ambition to pursue a legal career.

My advice would be to be yourself and try to enjoy the experience. Authenticity is important and helps you build genuine connections.
