First Year Programme Review

The A&O Shearman First Year Programme is a two-day insight scheme designed to give students a meaningful glimpse into life at an international commercial law firm.
It's an incredibly well-structured programme that balances practical learning through talks with current employees of the firm, as well as cultural immersion on what it is truly like working there.

Through sessions led by partners, associates, and trainees, I was able to see how different departments like Corporate, Disputes, and Finance all fit into the bigger picture of the firm’s global operations. What really stood out was how interconnected everything is—from advising on multi-jurisdictional deals to helping clients navigate innovation and sustainability goals.
Hearing directly from people working in areas like the Global Financial Markets group, the Markets Innovation Group, and even Fuse (the firm’s tech and innovation hub) helped me understand that a legal career at a firm like A&O Shearman has a wide range of roles that blend law with commercial strategy, tech, or social impact.

One of the most valuable skills I strengthened was my commercial awareness. Through sessions like “Anatomy of a Deal” and workshops led by trainees, I gained a much clearer understanding of how legal advice is shaped by broader business and industry contexts.
I also improved my communication and teamwork skills. During the programme, we worked in groups on interactive case studies and were encouraged to ask questions and contribute in discussions. Being able to articulate my thoughts clearly in a professional setting was a great confidence boost.

The culture at A&O Shearman was incredibly positive, supportive, and genuinely inspiring. One thing that really stood out to me was how open and enthusiastic everyone was, not just about the firm, but about the work they do. The lawyers here spoke with real passion, they embraced longer hours because they were excited to be working on some of the most high-profile, complex deals in the market. That sense of pride and motivation created an uplifting and energising atmosphere throughout the programme.

Despite being just two days, the insight was packed with engaging, varied sessions that gave a real understanding of life at the firm. From hearing directly from trainees and partners to exploring real-life case studies, each activity felt valuable and relevant. The social aspects, especially the evening event, made it easy to connect with others and get a feel for the firm’s culture in a relaxed setting. I left feeling inspired, far more confident in my career ambitions, and genuinely excited about the possibility of returning to the firm.
