Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
From the insight, participants were able to learn more about the firm’s impact through their various environmental strategies and volunteer work. We also learned about Fieldfisher’s culture through different networks, such as the PRIDE and Women@Work networks. What was really beneficial was both the opportunity to chat with trainees through a Q&A in addition to an evening social, in addition to a ‘department roadshow’ in which we heard from associates in different departments about the day to day work of trainees which was very insightful. We also did a group work pitch exercise to demonstrate how we would advertise this scheme to university students.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was interesting to learn about how the business truly put its people first. Through support networks and team sports, Fieldfisher has many opportunities for its lawyers to develop their internal network within the firm, further enhancing the supportive environment. We also learnt about the application process to qualify at Fieldfisher, with top application tips from graduate recruitment and the early careers team. It was really beneficial to gain a deeper understanding of how the application process works and the variety of routes into qualification, such as perhaps becoming a paralegal prior to obtaining a TC.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have developed my teamwork skills through the group exercise in which we had only a limited amount of time to complete the task. We all contributed to the task and gave unique ideas which strengthened our pitch. We also had to work on our verbal communication during the pitch to the Early Careers Team. I have also strengthened my networking skills by communicating with a whole range of lawyers, from trainees to the managing partner.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Fieldfisher was a really friendly firm. All the trainees, associates and partners were more than happy to give up their time to talk to us, and it was inspiring to see how passionate they work about their work and about life at Fieldfisher. The lawyers and early careers team have offered their support throughout and have demonstrated that they are keen to continue to support us in helping out with applications.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed this insight. Having attended other insights in different law firms, my insight at Fieldfisher has exceeded my experience at different firms. I enjoyed having a small cohort as there were only 6 of us, since it enabled us to get to know each other and feel comfortable working on the group exercise together, in addition to creating an environment in which we felt able to contribute to discussions and ask questions. It was also enjoyable to have a social with our cohort and the trainee where we could relax and have fun.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Fieldfisher LLP
I would say to get involved with the First Steps Programme as it gives you a great insight into the firm which is important to see if this is the right place for you. I would also tell a future applicant to stay true to themselves, because Fieldfisher values individuality and people who are organic. I would say to take initiative to get involved in different activities to demonstrate transferable skills during applications.
