Research & Media Intern Review

My role involved drafting a prototype script and storyboard telling the story of a historical figure commemorated on a historical plaque in the city centre, with a view to this being developed into an augmented reality experience. Alongside this project I also wrote scripts for other historical figures represented in the city centre. My work day-to-day involved a mixture of researching these historical figures, structuring and writing the scripts, and towards the end, creating a storyboard.

I was given responsibility in the sense that I was left to work quite independently -- it was up to me to set my own deadlines, to judge how long each step of the project would / should take, to seek feedback, and to act on it. I felt a responsibility to create a good prototype, knowing that otherwise resources might be "wasted" on me. That being said, it was still just a pilot project, so it felt like an appropriate amount of responsibility.

I developed my content-writing skills, learned the basics of storytelling, discovered more of Canva's functions, developed research skills, and organisational skills.

I was left to work very independently, and I could largely structure my time how I wanted, approach tasks with my chosen method, and work to my own deadlines, which did feel daunting -- but I did receive lots of advice and guidance on the art of storytelling, and was encouraged to share work as it progressed, from which I received plenty of constructive feedback.

Very friendly and tight-knit, and relatively informal.

I loved it -- it taught me lots of skills specific to storytelling and visual media, and plenty of "soft", transferrable skills like communication in the workplace, organisation, etc.
