Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
It involved being part of the preparations and the carrying out of the summer programme. Ensuring the cover of any health restrictions and an accessible play environment.
Supporting the social and emotional needs of children and Young People going through cancer aswell as the needs of friends and family supporters.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Alot more than I was expecting. I was encouraged and given the freedom to invent reflection tools around the den and to lead some sessions.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt so much!
Being able to be flexible to ever changing needs of children and Young People enduring cancer treatment. It's so important to ensure that they are able to participate as much as they wish to without any inhibitions from us. Developing sessions and play to adapt has been a really big learning point.
Also, in addition to this. Being emotionally flexible, too; when families are going through a bereavement it can be very different on whether they want to enjoy their day and play and interact or have a day to sit and reflect.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Very much a high standard of support throughout. From both the team and the university. Specifically from team who was keen to keep up to date on my progress and push me to fulfill my capabilities. As well as this from the university was always exceptional at keeping track on my progress and the support required.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Exceptionally so. It was in the field I wish to continue in and getting to help on a part of the families journeys was just incredibly touching.

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to University of Aberdeen
If you don't do it you'll never know. I applied on a whim with an eagerness to do that internship. I only applied to ones I was passionate about. I'm so glad I did. I'd hate to think my own anxieties had held me back from such an incredible summer of meeting wonderful people and building skills that are going to be fundamental to my future.
