Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Systems Engineers are responsible for ensuring projects or sections of projects are completed smoothly. They organise specialised engineers to spearhead design of products as well as complete the overarching paperwork such as systems requirements. They need to understand the design and manufacture process to ensure that they integrate their own work into the process to have it finished as efficiently as possible.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I have been in charge of completing tasks of varying importance, from minor but useful things to being set a large task that has an actual impact on the projects success. This has allowed me to train and learn in a stress free environment and then prove my abilities and learn real skills on a meaningful contribution to the company.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learned many new skills as well as developing my existing skills. I have fully learned the process of design and manufacture that my company uses which has also taught me how most industries format required documents and allowed me to anticipate what will be needed for a specific task. I have also managed to develop my business soft skills such as presenting and working in a team efficiently.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I have many different avenues of assistance and support if I need it. All of my colleagues are friendly and willing to help me. They understand that I'm here to learn and don't hold small mistakes or errors against me. The company as a whole has also presented many different contacts from all levels of the business should I need something that my co-workers cannot help me with.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is more relaxed than I expected, and a lot friendlier. It has enough professionalism to learn how to interact with those around me but enough informality, especially in the same offices but also over the entire site, to feel comfortable if you need to ask a favour or contact anyone. I am especially impressed with how dedicated to the employees the company is, putting our needs first and providing many opportunities to reach out if we need to.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have enjoyed my placement immensely! It has been the perfect place to learn in a relaxed and comfortable environment while still providing meaningful opportunities to contribute to the business as well as meet executive figures! I would highly recommend this placement to anyone in engineering or physics. You don't need to know much about Radar in the beginning but you'll be surprised by how much you enjoy it at the end.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems
I don't have any advice specific to BAE Systems, but my general advice would be work hard and try not to be afraid to meet people. The more well recognised and liked you are, the easier it gets to talk to people in the future which really helps with the work because you don't have to worry as much about speaking to people you haven't met. Also try to become as adaptable as possible. Get familiar with Excel, Word, SharePoint and as many different office systems (or programmes related to your specific job such as CAD software) as possible. It makes switching between different tasks a lot easier and less daunting. Finally, ask any and every question you can at all the opportunities you can get to, it's easy to sit silently and just listen but try to make use of the people you meet. There are no stupid questions.
