Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an industrial placement, I was involved in all of the typical Trustee work that a graduate would undertake. This would include contributing to the client teams to complete actuarial valuations of pension schemes, cash-equivalent transfer value calculations and corporate accounting calculations.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. I was treated entirely as a graduate and was given ample responsibility from the beginning. Working in a system of doer/checker/reviewer, gave me freedom to learn from the work I was completing, whilst having an appropriate responsibility and support when I made errors and received feedback.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I fine-tuned my Microsoft Excel coding, as well as familiarising myself with the valuation software used internally. I developed my presentation skills through talks in front of the actuarial team, as well as for the grading of my placement year for university.

I had various layers of support from my performance manager, to my fellow placement students and the checkers and reviewers above me in the respective client teams.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone was extremely friendly and adamant on me asking questions as soon as I was stuck. This reassured me that making mistakes was normal and I didn't feel the pressure to perfectly complete a piece of work.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would recommend it to anyone wanting to go into retirement actuarial. The support was perfect from the start and the opportunities going forward are perfect with regards to career prospects.
