Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Day to day I was tasked to help a team complete a reserve review, including rolling forward spread sheets, error checking and finalising information. Along side work with the team we also were tasked with our own reserving exercise which gave us the opportunity to talk to the wider team and learn how to use the reserving software.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

The first half of my internship involved my own personal project which I was given a lot of autonomy over, being able to add new elements that I thought would improve it and suggesting ideas to the wider team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed my excel skill learning how to utilise advanced functions I had not previously used. I have learnt communication and teamwork within a professional environment. I have also gained knowledge on the insurance industry and what is involved in actuarial work.

I was given lots of guidance and support, and the office fostered an environment in which I was comfortable asking for help.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The general atmosphere was great, I felt very welcome and included. There were lots of work socials where everyone was welcome and everyone was very friendly.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed my internship a lot more than I thought I would. I was surprised with how welcoming and friendly everyone was in a corporate workplace. I thoroughly enjoyed the work I was tasked with doing and was given lots of training which equipped me with the skills needed to complete it. I have gained lots of knowledge and skills over the course of this internship and will genuinely be sad to leave.
