Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role is a Blast Furnace process specialist. As part of a team we hold daily process reviews with the operators to ensure optimal production. I was given a project specifically looking at the blast furnace process influence on the Gas Cleaning Plant.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Due to the business situation I have had to take on more responsibility, especially in the last few months. I send out weekly flash reports and update daily meeting files. I was also part of a many problems solving sessions which required lots of data collection, analysis and presentation.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Problem solving has been a key skill in my placement. I have learnt and used new techniques including 5 why analysis, fish bone analysis and A3 thinking. I have also improved my presentation and public speaking skills through regular meeting facilitation within and outside the department.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The first few months were a slow start when figuring out the right project for me. However, when I was allocated a project the team around me were very supportive and offered lots of advice.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Due to the current business situation the atmosphere changed during the placement. It was obvious people were stressed and unsure of the future. However, in general before the announcement the atmosphere was very good.

What advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel
Try to see as much of the site as possible. Only once visiting other parts of site did I get a full understanding of the operation. Also use the opportunity to meet new people and network.
