People Team Summer Intern Review

My role was to create a SharePoint site from scratch through to launch, to share company documentation across the company. On a day-to-day basis, this involved having to communicate with different stakeholders across the wider company. Most days involved experimenting with the site, to find out more about the potential functionality which I could use to company benefit. To immerse myself within the CES+ team, I attended multiple calls a day to find out more about the inner workings of the wider group, outside of the People team.

I was given much more responsibility that I originally expected. This was really great, as it made me feel that I had truly made a difference to the company. I was given an independent task, which was completely mine to own and do with it what I see fit. There was always support available if I ever needed it, and my line manager always ensured that I was comfortable with the workload and offered to make any changes should I so wish.

The skill which I have developed most clearly are my digital skills. I had never used SharePoint before coming to Centrica, and I now have full confidence in my ability to use the site. This skill development occurred due to the time that I dedicated to my learning and using initiative of using sources outside of those provided by Centrica. After having communicated with the Centrica tech team, I was provided with a brief overview of how to solve any technical issues I was having. I preferred being provided with direction, over being given a step-by-step, of how to resolve the issues I was having. This helped me to consolidate my learning.

I was provided with lots of support before and during my internship. The Emerging Talent team at Centrica were always on hand to resolve any queries or questions that I had. Before I began my internship, I received continuous updates on the progress of my application, which kept me in the loop. Throughout the internship, my line manager was my first point of contact, and she was always on hand to resolve any questions I had within the day (normally within the hour). All interns at Centrica were provided with a buddy, who was someone who works in the business on the graduate scheme. My buddy and I had weekly catch-ups, to look at my progress and to answer any questions that I had.

The company culture is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Everybody was always on hand to answer questions, or just to have a chat, no matter the level that they sat at. It is this friendly atmosphere that really added to my time at Centrica and made it all the more valuable. I was able to find out about the wider aspects of the company, outside of my direct role, which allowed me to integrate myself better into the wider team.

I absolutely loved my summer internship at Centrica, and would recommend it to everybody! From day one till close, we were closely supported by many members of the team. I loved getting involved in all the extra opportunities available to us.
