Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a member of the environmental process optimisation team, I worked on a variety of projects. Due to my background, these were mostly effluent based and covered both the Port Talbot and Llanwern sites. My day-to-day involved collecting and submitting various samples to help move forward different parts of the project. The subsequent data analysis was also my responsibility, and took up a large portion of my time.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given ownership of two large projects during my placement. These were both improvement projects for effluent at Port Talbot and Llanwern. These sites have vastly different needs and thus have very different options available for treatment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt a lot about how various effluent streams can be treated, and how industrial waste generated on Tata sites is dealt with. I have also been able to get a better understanding of various useful programs, such as excel and visio. These have both been instrumental to the work I have carried out during my placement.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Whenever I needed support or guidance, I always felt comfortable to reach out and ask. I have had two great line managers during my time at Tata Steel, and I have also had a great help from various members of the larger Sustainability and Environment team.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere varied a lot, from mostly positive to fairly negative. This is mainly due to the announcement of redundancies and closure of parts of the Port Talbot site. For the most part, the culture and atmosphere in the S&E team was always great.
