Vacation Scheme Student Review

On a day-to-day basis, we were able to get involved in real work within our departments, completing tasks such as research, summaries, and proofreading (etc)- dependent on the department in which you were sat. This was balanced alongside different workshops and social sessions in which we were able to learn more about initiatives and work that the firm has been involved in or offers.

We were given an in depth insight into the role of the trainee and what support the business would give you if you were to be offered that role. It was also interesting to see how there were roles that were available beyond the trainee, such as roles in the different networks and pro-bono initiatives which can help expand your skillset and contacts within the firm. It was also interesting learning more about the importance of business development through the group pitch task which offered a unique insight into the way the firm generates work through business development strategies. Meeting the CEO was also an incredibly interesting insight into the business and how it works.

I have developed my ability to manage my workload and time, as this was really important given we had to balance completing all tasks to a high level with the workshops. My communication skills have definitely improved, too. This was because it was important to ensure you understood instructions for tasks so that they could be completed effectively and correctly. It was also because the scheme offered the opportunity to meet so many new people. I found by the end of my time on the scheme I was more confident about introducing myself to people around the firm and communicating my thoughts on different matters.

I had always been told that everyone at HSF is friendly and welcoming and my three weeks here has only shown this to be true. I have found everyone to be happy to introduce themselves and give me an insight into their role and experience at the firm which has been very motivating and encouraging. I have been invited to a range of different events both inside and outside my department and the general atmosphere is friendly and collaborative. This has helped me to settle in much quicker and feel comfortable around the firm.

I have had a wonderful time on the vacation scheme and found it to be a really worthwhile experience. The insights into the firm were useful and incredibly interesting and will be helpful for progressing my legal career and finding which area of law is the one I would like to gain more experience in.
