Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role was within a Commercial Valuation team and involved assisting the team value a range of commercial properties largely for loan security purposes. Most days would consist in assisting the team with any day to day tasks, such as identifying comparable properties for evidence of leasing/investment activity, calling agents to confirm information, writing sections of red book valuation reports, attending meetings and assisting with any other tasks that arise.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Plenty of responsibility without it being too much, such as being relied upon to write sections of Red Book Valuation reports, confirming leasing/investment activity by phone calls to other agents to confirm information validity, drafting property schedules for more complex valuations etc.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, particularly report writing skills. When undertaking a Red Book Valuation it is important to remain impartial and to ensure all aspects of the report are verified to ensure dependability. Furthermore, more insight was gained into how different valuation methods are used in practice along with other aspects of a valuation such as verifying tenant covenant strength and the due diligence process.
