Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role is based in the product engineering team and I work across the hair science and technology category. I work with scientists and fellow process engineers to develop the manufacturing process for novel shampoo formulations. This involves designing experimental work in our pilot plant, manufacturing shampoo from 2L-50L scales. Then characterising what is made in our laboratories to determine the optimal process. As well as this, there are weekly team meetings to feedback new findings.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given many responsibilities during my placement. I designed and conducting an experiment investigating the optimal process for shampoo manufacture. This involved planning my time in our pilot plant alongside analysing the data from this and creating presentations to share my findings with the team. Alongside this, I was responsible for organising inductions for 4 new starters joining our team. Towards the end of my placement, I was also trusted to train 5 fellow process engineers on the piece of equipment I am well versed in.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely fine-tuned my problem solving skills, as this is very important for a role in research and development, specifically in chemical engineering. Things can go wrong a lot when developing a new process, but it is always important to not let it effect you if it is out of your control, and focus on what your next steps are. I have learnt to prioritize certain tasks over others which comes naturally under time management skills.
I have most importantly developed my professional people skills through networking with colleagues and presenting work in team meetings.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
From the very beginning of my placement I received much support and guidance. I had a crossover with previous placement students in my team which ensured they could pass their tips and tricks onto me. As well as this, everyone in my team is willing to help and share the knowledge they have gained over their years at the company. I also had monthly meetings with my line manager and weekly meetings with my project manager which helped massively.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is very welcoming. From my first day I felt very comfortable at work and around my colleagues. An inclusive culture is very important to me and at Unilever I felt that this was also valued highly. There are many things to get involved in at work which creates this togetherness culture.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My time on this placement was better than I could have expected. The people I met and I was surrounded by everyday are what made this placement so enjoyable. As well as this, it was important to me to be able to understand the working world after 3 years at University and so I also enjoyed being able to use that knowledge I gained to have an impact in R&D at Unilever.
