Summer Scheme Student Review

I sit with the development team which has involved activities such as doing due diligence for new sites through examining the local plan. Additionally, the team have allowed me to accompany them when visiting potential new sites and to assist in gathering data when at these sites. My role largely focuses on assessing the possibility for development on sites through gathering data about the planning policy and restrictions which surround them

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of responsibility which was entrusted to me as part of this placement. Still being a university student had me unsure as to the level of trust which would be placed in me as part of this role but the team have been amazing at making sure I was given space to experiment and learn within my role. I would often be instructed on a task and allowed to find my own way through it, with any questions I posed being happily and promptly answered

The team I am working with have helped me improve when locating and extracting data regarding sites. Additionally, my analytical skills have been developed through my experiences both on a computer and out on site. This role has also hugely developed my ability to problem solve and my attention to detail as I have often had to dig through several documents to find the information needed. Furthermore, the opportunity to improve my communication and teamwork skills when out on site has proven invaluable

The support which was given to me was of a very high standard, as was the way in which it was provided. At no point did I feel that anyone was trying to complete my work for me, or take anything away from me. Instead, I was allowed to conduct work independently and when I did have questions or get stuck, the advice I was given was provided in a manner which allowed me to find my own way to the answer and learn as part of it, as opposed to merely being awarded the solution without an opportunity to learn

The atmosphere in the office has been one of the standout factors in this Internship. The manner in which everyone conducts themselves is very professional but also extremely approachable. I have been able to freely branch out to other teams socially and was never made to feel like a hindrance. The culture of the company was also very positively displayed in my time here with a clear emphasis being placed on the importance of inclusion

As this internship comes to the end it stands out to me as one of the best things I have completed to date. Being at the end of the university term I was skeptical that I would be jealous of my peers during the post-examination period but at no point was I craving to be anywhere else. The approachable atmosphere in the office made socialising very easy and the way in which the scheme was conducted made it very rewarding and enjoyable
