Vacation Scheme Participant Review

Each day I was assigned tasks by either my trainee buddy or supervisor. These ranged from practical legal work to research tasks that would form the basis of articles. These were both equally beneficial as the practical work really provided a taste of what it would be like to work Dentons while the research tasks helped to bridge the gap between university work and private practice.

Dentons is the biggest firm in the world and so it was extremely interesting to gain an understanding as to how the business works. The placement illustrated what business challenges are encountered on a day to day basis and an insight into the firms vast range of clients.
As for the potential roles available they are almost endless. I spoke to many people throughout my 2 weeks who all work and specialise in different areas of the law. The diversity of the firm and the skills of the people within it cannot be understated.

The scheme helped me to develop many skills, particularly my analytical and communication skills. It was crucial to be analytical in each task and ensuring that each detail was accounted for and all work was completed to a high standard.
Furthermore, the scheme allowed me to develop my communication skills as I was communicating with people within the legal profession all day everyday, which is something I have never experienced before. These conversations allowed me to gain further insight into the firm, the people who work there and the legal profession more generally.

My main takeaway from the scheme was how great the people working at Dentons are and how each person embodies the values of the firm. I felt welcomed and comfortable right from the first day and the support, advice and encouragement I received throughout the 2 weeks could not have been better. When the office was busy the atmosphere was great the perfect balance of people enjoying themselves while still working hard, it never felt like anyone was sat doing nothing everyone was occupied and focussed. The only exception to this was the laughing and joking which ensured that there was a always a nice friendly atmosphere.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the scheme, it provided me with a wealth of invaluable experience. Whether this came in the form of the work itself developing my skills or the great people within the firm making it such a joy to be apart of. On top of this the training and workshops we completed each day were extremely beneficial providing both insight into the firm, and also promoting each Vacation Scheme participants personal development.
