Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Dealing with data on spreadsheets: data gathering, data cleaning, data validation, and building models on Excel. Sometimes building data visualisations on Power BI. Flexible job, so can branch out to explore what other members of the team are working on. Responsible for one or two projects, communicating with external data company which also builds data models, which I would validate through building an Excel model. The models are generally to forecast emissions, energy use, etc. for GSK sites across the world to improve their sustainability.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given responsibility for one project, but it was difficult to know what the next step would be without my manager's guidance. Otherwise, I was helping (but not leading) other data modelling projects.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received support and guidance from my line manger, and other mentors/buddies. However, I did not receive much feedback on my work itself. I imagine this was difficult for my line manager as he had personal matters to tend to during a lot of my placement time.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company culture is very kind. Everyone is willing to give you time and support when you ask for it. Though it is clear people work hard, the atmosphere is very relaxed. In the office you can see almost everyone starts packing up and leaving by 5pm.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I loved the culture, people, relaxed atmosphere, and I enjoyed the projects I was working on. My team is working on projects that will have huge impacts on the environment. The thing I struggled with the most is that I felt I had capacity to do more, but there was not much more I could contribute to inside my team. I was able to look outside my team and find another data team at Ware where I worked on another data project.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
This is a great company. If you want technical/science experience, apply to work on a manufacturing site or an R&D site. The offices are good, but are generally for more central roles. Be yourself in the interview and understand what the company values are.
